What Is a Water Pump?

Brian Bates

It's a hot day and you're on the highway, the temperature gauge in your car steadily rising. You start to panic as you realize that your car is overheating. What do you do? One option is to pull over and call a tow truck. In this blog post, we will discuss what a water pump is/does and what symptoms can indicate that it is failing and needs to be replaced.

What Is a Water Pump & What Does It Do?

The water pump is an essential component of your car's cooling system. Its job is to circulate coolant throughout the engine, keeping it at the correct operating temperature. If the water pump fails, coolant will no longer be circulated and your engine will overheat.

There are several symptoms that can indicate a failing water pump, such as:
1. Leaking coolant: A leaking water pump will cause coolant to drip from underneath the car. If you see green or orange fluid on the ground where you parked your car, it is likely that the water pump is the culprit.
2. Overheating engine: As we mentioned before, one of the most common signs of a failing water pump is an overheating engine. If you notice that the temperature gauge in your car is rising, or if the engine warning light comes on, pull over and turn off the engine as soon as possible.
3. Steam coming from under the hood: Another symptom of a failing water pump is steam coming from under the hood. This is a sure sign that the engine is overheating and needs to be turned off immediately.
4. Loud noise: A loud noise coming from the front of the car, near the water pump, can also indicate that it is failing. If you hear a whining or grinding noise, pull over and turn off the engine to avoid further damage.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to have your car checked out by an expert as soon as possible.
