Do or Don't: Eating and Driving

Eating and Driving

Have you pulled up to someone next to you at the stoplight to see them going ham on their sandwich, munching on their fries, or gulping down their soda? Believe it or not, this happens all the time. Even though this happens day in and day out, is it technically safe to eat and drive? You may wonder, is it even legal? Today, we are going to go over a debatable topic: eating and driving.

As more and more people prefer fast food due to its convenience, drivers are more inclined to munch on their food as soon as they pull out of the drive-thru. To answer your question: no, it is not safe to eat and drive. Eating is a form of distracted driving, and believe it or not; it is a widespread cause of vehicle accidents. It is considered dangerous because it requires the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel. Not only is it physically distracting, but it does not help that eating will divert the driver's eyes and concentration to the food and not the road.

If you do decide to indulge in fast food, we recommend you take a minute to think about the consequences of driving and eating. If you want to enjoy your food, then it's best to pull over to finish the meal. Or you can be patient by waiting to get to your destination to eat. Having self-control can minimize the risk of getting into an accident and costly repairs associated with it altogether. You can also save yourself from spills and greasy messes to clean.

Though no laws specify whether you can or can't eat behind the wheel, it doesn't mean it is safe to do so. It can increase your likelihood of swerving out of your lane and causing an accident, resulting in costly fines. Your food may be delicious, but is it worth risking your life for?
